Web Engineering

Web engineering is an emerging discipline that actively promotes systematic, disciplined and quantifiable approaches towards successful development of high-quality, ubiquitously usable Web-based systems and applications.

In the ambit of Web Engineering aspects of Web accessibility, implementation of Java-based Web portals have been studied, and a logging system for Java portals has been defined. In particular, the latter research, has focused on a system for the evaluation of the Web traffic at a deeper level of the usual page level analysis: the levels of section and portlet (sections produced by different sources and then integrated in the same portal page). The interest of the user on the sections is measured through implicit interest indicators, such as the visibility of the section, mouse movements, and other client-side interactions. The system is composed of

  • A framework which, instantiated in any portal, silently captures the interactions of the use;
  • A log analyzer.

In the ambit of Web metrics, the research has focused on the effort estimation of object-oriented software product development, leading to the definition of the Class Points. The method proposes two measures, called CP1 and CP2. CP1 is conceived to be used at the beginning of the development process to propose a preliminar estimation, which can be then refined when more information is available, by applying CP2. The basic idea of the approach is to quantify the classes similarly to the function count performed in the traditional Function Point.
The method COSMIC-FFP has been adapted to the Web and comparisons with other size metrics have been performed.
